Retail Profit Management (RPM) ESRI Business Analyst 9.1

ESRI Business Analyst 9.1 Concurrent Use Install

Go to Add-Remove programs and uninstall and remove your old ArcGIS, ArcGIS Business Analyst and Crystal Reports for ESRI files

Installing ArcGIS Business Analyst 9.1, Concurrent Use License

Based on testing at RPM, we strongly suggest that you install on client PCs with the recommended 2GB of RAM or more.

Since the network server setup typically requires rebooting after the hardware key is installed, we suggest that install be scheduled so as to minimize other demands on the server (early AM or late hours).

You’ll need your new 9.1 versions and all authorization codes for ArcGIS and the Business Analyst software, data, Network Analyst, and StreetMap.

Basically, during this install process you will set up the License Manager on the network server, backup and remove old files from client PCs as necessary, install new ones, obtain and confirm license authorizations, and run the new software.

Make sure that all installation steps on the client PC are completed under the end-user’s network login.  You can use Windows “Install As” command if you are an IT or network person doing this install for an end-user.

SETTING UP LICENSE MANAGER & NETWORK STORAGE FOR USERS ON THE NETWORK SERVER

Install the USB hardware key on the network server, and then the License Manager from the ArcGIS 9.1 program CD.  Create a “My Output Data” folder on the network server to hold user-created files.

Later, during the Business Analyst custom install, we will designate a new “My Output Data 2” folder for new user files created with 9.1.

CLIENT PC INSTALL PROCEDURES

BACKUP CURRENT FILES

First, backup or archive all user work products, saved in the My Output Data folder and/or elsewhere.

REMOVE OLD SOFTWARE

Go to Add-Remove programs, and uninstall and remove your old ArcGIS, ArcGIS Business Analyst and Crystal Reports for ESRI files.

INSTALL MICRSOFT .NET FRAMEWORK 1.1

After the old software is uninstalled, check the Add/Remove Programs list to see if you have Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 installed.

If it’s not on your list, install Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 from the DOTNETFX.EXE file on the ArcGIS Business Analyst disk, in the DotNet Framework folder.  You will install support for it in the next step.

INSTALL NEW SOFTWARE – ARCVIEW 9.1

Now you’re ready to install the concurrent use version of ArcGIS 9.1 suite from the ArcGIS 9.1 Media Kit.  This consists of ArcView 9.1, the new and much-anticipated Network Analyst, the .NET Support as needed, and Crystal Reports (BusinessObjects) 11 including two updates.

Do a Concurrent Use, Custom install of ArcGIS 9.1, including the .NET Support and the Network Analyst extension.  You will be prompted to point the client software to the License Manager on the network server and also to add .NET Support (if not already installed, as described earlier) and additional extensions (you’ll choose “Network Analyst”) during the installation process for ArcGIS 9.1.

INSTALL & UPDATE NEW SOFTWARE – BUSINESS OBJECTS (CRYSTAL REPORTS) 11

When the ArcView 9.1 installation completes, you will be asked if you want to install Business Objects (Crystal) 11, the Tutorial and/or the Developer Kit.   Install Business Objects 11.  We also recommend that you install both the Tutorial and Desktop Developer Kit.  The Tutorial will help users become more familiar with the software, and the Developer Kit will be useful later in implementing new features that you, we, and/or others create.

You will also need to install two updates for BusinessObjects 11, which are in two separate folders on the ArcGIS Business Analyst 9.1 program DVD, CRYSTALXI_PATCHES\CRXI_PATCH1 and CRXI_PATCH2.

REGISTER AND LICENSE ARCGIS 9.1

The recommended Registration Method is by Internet.  You should have received authorization codes with your software – if you didn’t, contact us and we’ll get them for you.

During client install, you’ll enter these authorization codes when prompted.  You can also do this at the end of the complete install of the Business Analyst, using the Desktop Administrator (Start-Programs-ArcGIS-Desktop Administrator).

INSTALL BUSINESS ANALYST

Now, install the Business Analyst itself, which will consume over 6GB of hard drive space and may take an hour or more to complete.

We recommend choosing the Custom install option, so that we can specify the new name for your new work products folder, which is My Output Data 2 on the new server, during the custom Business Analyst install.  This will allow us to maintain data source linkages in existing user project files so that users can use these without having to re-set their data sources (though we will need to re-set the data source for the Business Analyst data itself, please see below).  Otherwise, you’ll install everything as you would with the Complete Data Install.

OBTAINING LICENSE FILES & CONFIRMING LICENSES

As mentioned above, you can register and license your software at the end of the install, or later using the Desktop Administrator (Start-Programs-ArcGIS-Desktop Administrator, Register Concurrent Use and Extensions).

To confirm that your licenses have been correctly applied, run the Desktop Administrator (Start-Programs-ArcGIS-Desktop Administrator) and go to Availability to make sure all your components are Installed, Registered and Permanent.  Call us if anything did not register and license properly.

RUN THE SOFTWARE

Now, on the client machine, go to Start-Programs-ArcGIS-Business Analyst.mxd to run the software.  After the program loads, under Tools-Extensions, make sure that the Business Analyst extension is check-marked and on; and under View-Toolbars make sure the Business Analyst toolbar is check-marked and on.

We then suggest that users start out with version 9.1 by clicking on the Quick Start Tutorial icon on the right of the Business Analyst toolbar.

OPENING LEGACY PROJECT FILES

Finally, we can have users pick up where they left off by running the Business Analyst, and opening any legacy project file or files they may have with work done to date.  We will then need to update file references to the new server – right click on the “Business Analyst Data” item in the Table of Contents in the right panel and Remove it; and then click on the Add Data button (the icon with the plus sign on the top toolbar) and navigate to the Business Analyst.lyr file which should be in Program Files/ArcGIS/Business Analyst/Data and add it.

Enjoy! And of course, please call us if you need help or have questions, comments or concerns.
